Remembering Brian Sole FRPSL: A Life Dedicated to Thematic Philately
It is with great sadness that the philatelic community has learned of the passing of Frederick Brian John Sole FRPSL (1938–2026), widely known simply as Brian, who was one of the most influential figures in British thematic philately.
Over a career spanning several decades, Brian's contributions as an exhibitor, judge, organiser, and mentor helped shape the landscape of thematic collecting both in the United Kingdom and across Europe.
Brian was an elected Fellow of the Royal Philatelic Society of London, a distinction that reflected his standing within the hobby. For several years he served on the Society's "Meet and Greet" team at its previous premises, welcoming visitors and fellow collectors with the warmth and genuine interest that would become his hallmark. Beyond the Royal, he was actively involved in organised philately at local and regional level, serving as Secretary of Kingston Upon Thames Philatelic Society and as President of the Federation of Surrey Philatelic Societies. He was also a regular attendee at the Philatelic Congress of Great Britain, where he was awarded the prestigious Congress Medal in 2002 in recognition of his outstanding service to philately.
His involvement extended to the international stage as well. Brian served as UK Commissioner at Genova '92 and attended PhilaNippon in Japan in both 2001 and 2002, representing British philately abroad with characteristic professionalism and good grace.
A passion for cycling on stamps
Like many thematic collectors, Brian chose a subject close to his heart. Having been a keen cyclist in his younger years, he began collecting philatelic material relating to cycling during the 1970s and quickly developed into a highly accomplished exhibitor. His celebrated exhibit, "Go by Cycle!", earned a Gold medal at the international exhibition in Singapore in 2002, a significant achievement that underlined both the quality of the material and the depth of his research. He went on to display "Go by Cycle!" at venues across the country, including a showing to the National Philatelic Society as recently as 2023.
Brian's enthusiasm for cycling-themed philately also led him to serve as President of the Bicycle Stamp Club from 2002 to 2016. In later years, he turned his attention to postcard collecting within the same theme, and in 2021 he was awarded a Gold medal at Autumn Stampex in the Picture Postcard Class for his display "Cycle Past."
Championing thematic philately
Perhaps Brian's most significant and sustained contribution was to the British Thematic Association (BTA), of which he was a founder member. He served as Secretary from the Association's foundation in 1984 through to 1995, before taking on the role of Chairman for four years and then becoming President in 2003. During his presidency, he oversaw a notable BTA display at the Royal Philatelic Society of London in 2005, which featured 28 individual displays including his own. When the BTA again displayed at the Royal in 2024, Brian's work was once more among those featured. He finally retired from the Committee in 2008 but continued his association as Patron.
Throughout all of this, Brian was a tireless worker behind the scenes. He regularly staffed BTA tables at regional and national events and was for many years the principal organiser of the BTA's involvement in Thematica, the annual thematic event held in London. In that capacity, he managed the Inter-Federation Thematic Competition, the two BTA competitions, and the BTA stand. When Thematica faced the threat of closure due to a lack of financial support, it was Brian who stepped in to organise "Friends of Thematica," a fundraising initiative that helped keep the event going.
He was also a regular member of the British team at Eurothema, a biennial thematic event held in various European countries, and in 2008 he was one of the organisers, as well as the UK judge, when the BTA staged the event in London.
Judging, education, and publishing
Brian's expertise in thematic philately was recognised through his qualification as a judge in both Thematic Philately and Open Philately in the UK, and in Thematic Philately at FEPA (Federation of European Philatelic Associations) events across Europe. He used this knowledge generously, sharing his experience through talks and workshops that encouraged and inspired collectors who were just beginning their exhibiting journeys.
His commitment to education and accessibility also found expression in publishing. Together with the late Franceska Rapkin, he translated from the original Dutch into English the "Handbook of Thematic Philately" by Pim van den Bold, published in 1994 - a work that became an important reference for thematic collectors in the English-speaking world. Only a couple of years before his passing, he published "A Reminder of the British Greetings Telegram Service," a detailed catalogue covering every issue in the series.
Wider collecting interests
Brian's philatelic interests were not confined to cycling or thematic collecting alone. His career in banking led to involvement with the Insurance and Banking Philatelic Society, and he maintained a fine collection of Guernsey material from the Second World War onwards.
A lasting legacy
Those who knew Brian will remember him for his hard work, his boundless enthusiasm, and his remarkable diplomatic skills, which proved invaluable in resolving many a contentious situation within the world of organised philately. Above all, however, he will be remembered for the kindness and genuine interest he showed to every person who ever approached him about stamps and collecting. His contributions to thematic philately, to exhibiting standards, and to the wider philatelic community were immense, and his legacy will be felt for many years to come.
