Royal Mail has enjoyed a long tradition of celebrating occasions of national significance and marking momentous moments in Great Britain’s history. Royal postage stamps are a favourite among collectors and represent an opportunity to chart the progress of our most recognisable family as they navigate birthday milestones, public marriages and high-profile births.

Part of the Royal Mail’s special stamps collection, the most recent addition is a set of stamps and collectables issued to coincide with the 70th birthday of HRH The Prince of Wales.

Designed as a timeline of Prince Charles’s life, the stamps depict scenes from his younger years, right up until the present day.

Charles is pictured with the Duchess of Cornwall, and there is also a touching family portrait with his now grown-up sons, William and Harry.

Perhaps the reason for the enduring popularity of royalty-themed images is the fact that, as we follow the House of Windsor throughout their many trials and tribulations, these special stamps offer a poignant echo of our own family stories.

Celebrating historic occasions with Royal postage stamps

The Queen’s profile features on the everyday postage stamps with which we are all familiar, and her long reign has certainly kept Royal Mail designers busy over the years.

In 2012, people from around the world celebrated the Diamond Jubilee to recognise our most senior royal’s achievements, and the passing of six decades that has seen great change throughout the world.

Meanwhile, special stamps have also been released to honour the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle earlier in 2018.

The romantic engagement portraits feature the then soon-to-be bride and groom as they posed for photographer Alexi Lubomirski at Frogmore House.

Share in a piece of history

Collecting a royal stamp that has been issued to observe an event or occasion of national – and indeed international – significance is a chance to own a little piece of the nation’s history.

Commemorative stamps form part of our collective heritage, celebrating what unites rather than divides us and allowing us to preserve memories of a family that, although famous, may sometimes resonate with our own experiences.
